![]() ![]() Suffice it to say that each of Krauss’s searching and sentient characters is both exactly who he or she seems to be and another person entirely, and that that paradox is expertly worked out as Krauss gradually reveals the provenance of the eponymous History the relationship that embraces Litvinoff, Gursky and the latter’s mysterious upstairs neighbor Bruno and the woman or women they “all” loved and lost. Alma’s memories of her late father, a cancer victim, take the forms of a fixation on survival techniques and an obsession with an autobiographical book (which Charlotte translates): a homage to another Alma, and the work of Holocaust survivor Zvi Litvinoff, whose resemblances to and connections with Leo Gursky lie at the heart of this novel’s unfolding mysteries. Following a bleakly funny opening sequence that sharply dramatizes Leo’s undiminishable vitality, and also reveals teasing details about Alma’s American life, second-novelist Krauss ( Man Walks into a Room, 2002) shifts the focus to adolescent Alma Singer, who’s edging cautiously toward womanhood while dealing with her unstable younger brother Emanuel (aka “Bird”) and widowed mother Charlotte (a literary translator). The first of the stories here is that of New York City octogenarian Leo Gursky, a Polish war refugee who came to America seeking Alma, the girl he had loved, who had emigrated before him. ![]() ![]() The histories of several unresolved, inchoate and remembered loves. ![]()

(Jeremy’s also in the sixth grade-pretty realistic, as girls were terrifying to me too at that age.) Once safely inside, he finds a weird blue marble-like thing which the shopkeeper lets him have for a quarter. Our protagonist, Jeremy Thatcher, runs into a magic store-Elives’ Magic Supplies-while being chased by bullies and a girl who wants to kiss him. Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher was one of a series of books revolving around a mysterious magic store, but since this is the only one of the series that focuses on dragons, it’s, perhaps unsurprisingly, the only one I remember. But before reading Dragonriders of Pern, another of my favorite dragon books was Bruce Coville’s 1992 children’s novel Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher. ![]() (My librarian apparently didn’t see anything wrong with giving that series to a girl just barely in middle school). I devoured Tamora Pierce’s Immortals quartet, where main character Daine is raising a dragon called Kitten, Patricia Wrede’s Enchanted Forest Chronicles, where the princess volunteers to be a dragon’s “captive” princess so that she can have fun adventures-fuck, I even read Dragonriders of Pern when I was in the sixth grade. I mean, I still love dragons, but I especially loved them as a kid-there was a time when I literally picked all my reading material based on the numbers of dragons they had. ![]() ![]() ![]() for Daniel Handler Lemony Snicket, Brett Helquist (Illustrator) Lemony Snicket, Lemony Illustrations by Helquist Snicket, Brett, Lemony(Author) Helquist Snicket, Brett(Illustrator) Lemony Snicket, Lemony Snicket, Donation, By (author) Lemony Snicket, Lemony Snicket, ages 8-12, David (Lemony Snicket Handler, Daniel Lemony Handler Snicket, Snicket Lemony (Daniel Handler), Daniel AKA Lemony Snicket Handler, Lemony Snicket aka Daniel Handler, Lemony aka Daniel Handler Snicket, Lemony Snicket aka Daniel Handler, Daniel Handler aka Lemony Snicket, Lemony and Handler Snicket, Daniel, Lemony Snicket Brett Helquist (Ill.), Lemony intro by Daniel Handler Snicket, psevd. In Tightly Tangled Thread, Natasha comes off as barely competent and losing her grip on right and wrong. The Punisher made it look like Natasha doesn’t know when someone doesn’t have the information she wants. What was the point of Daredevil and The Punisher? Daredevil seemed to show up in order to moralize and show Natasha to be more comfortable with the gray areas. I found Tightly Tangled Thread problematic in a lot of ways. I was fine with that, because we are still establishing Natasha, and the artwork was so freaking beautiful. I loved it, but it reminded me a bit of the Electra Movie (super spy/assassin alone and isolated by choice, her only contact a man of business) and a little of Burn Notice (when you’re a spy…). In The Finely Woven Thread, Natasha dwells a lot on her isolation and her craft. Tightly Tangled Thread made me rethink that position. ![]() The Finely Woven Thread made me feel like Marvel does know what to do with Natasha on her own. ![]() I’d love to see more of the Natasha/Tori Raven relationship. There’s enough that we don’t know about Natasha’s life, that a non-Avengers Black Widow movie would be viable. I know the Marvel movie and comics universes are separate, but I would pay money to see a movie version of the Molot Boga and Damon Dran story. ![]() ![]() ![]() Seducing Khai, however, doesn't go as planned.
